California Formulary Seeks to Replicate Texas Results

The California workers’ compensation system is trying to create a prescription formulary that will generate the success of the Texas workers’ compensation drug formulary. The Sacramento Business Journal observes that California Gov. Jerry Brown signed a bill Tuesday that will establish a list of prescription drugs approved by California’s workers’ compensation system. Assembly Bill 1124 by Democratic Assembly member. Henry Perea from Fresno requires the Division of Workers Compensation to adopt the list of drugs the program agrees to cover by July 1, 2017.

A November 2014 study by the California Workers’ Compensation Institute found that workers’ compensation formularies in Texas and Washington could cut California workers’ comp drug payments between $124 and $420 million a year.
