DWC Warns of Fraud Alert

Mar 5, 2026 | by FOL

Dan LaBruyere, Deputy Commissioner of Compliance and Investigations with TDI-DWC, indicated in a recent memo to stakeholders that DWC has become aware of a nationwide scam that targets injured employees by impersonating state regulators, including the Texas Department of Insurance, Division of Workers’ Compensation (DWC). The scammers direct injured employees to pay “fees” or “taxes” before “DWC” will release alleged benefits.

Mr. LaBruyere notes that DWC does not pay benefits to injured employees and would not contact an employee for this information.

If an injured employee receives a bill or payment request related to their benefits allegedly from DWC, they should immediately contact DWC Customer Service at 800-252-7031.

If any stakeholder encounters or suspects this fraudulent scheme, they are encouraged to report it to DWC Fraud at:
