FOL to Participate in WCI Virtual Conference Next Week
For the past 10 years lawyers from Flahive, Ogden & Latson have presented as part of the Workers’ Compensation Institute’s national conference. The Orlando conference is a 3-day learning extravaganza for stakeholders in the workers’ compensation community. The conference typically attracts 8,000 to 9,000 attendees.
Next week, owing to the COVID-19 pandemic, WCI will present a virtual version of the conference– and attendance is free. The three-day presentation will take place on August 17-19, 2020.
Our firm will participate in the popular multi-state review of laws in 13 jurisdictions, including California, Illinois, Florida, Texas, Georgia and eight more states. Lawyers from each of those states will discuss how their jurisdiction approaches the investigation and compensability determination of injuries alleged to have occurred while working from home. In addition, the attorney panels will contrast and compare the use of the intoxication defense in each jurisdiction. There will be a special emphasis on developing effective file closure techniques.
This two-hour session, which will take place on Monday afternoon and Tuesday morning, has been approved by the Texas Department of Insurance for 2 hours of continuing education credit. (Registration for and attendance at both sessions is required by TDI rules.)
On Tuesday morning, the conference will telecast a live surgery in a workers’ compensation case. This event offers a unique interactive look into an operating room as Dr. Michael D. Riggenbach performs an upper extremity surgery. The surgical procedure will stream live from an outpatient surgery center with the help of moderator Dr. Lawrence S. Halperin. The two orthopedic surgeons will describe the procedure step-by-step and will answer questions from the audience. The goal of the presentation is to provide an in-depth education on upper extremity anatomy, all aspects of the joint that will be impacted by the surgery and examine how the injury and recovery period affect day-to-day activity, employment restrictions and workers’ compensation claims processing.
The National Workers’ Compensation Review breakout session on Tuesday afternoon will debate new policy issues in presumption for first responders and present a session on new AMA Guides for Permanent Impairment ratings.
Kimberly George and Mark Walls will keynote the conference with a panel of workers’ comp experts during the opening session Monday morning. Register now for this interesting, timely, and free virtual conference.
