Debra Knight Named New Compliance Chief at DWC

Oct 10, 2018 | by FOL

Commissioner of Workers’ Compensation Cassie Brown announces Debra Knight as the new Deputy Commissioner of Compliance and Investigations. Ms. Knight will fill the position formerly occupied by Tim Riley, who retired earlier this year. She will report directly to the Commissioner of Workers’ Compensation.

Compliance and Investigations is a Division program area that is responsible for monitoring and investigating fraud and administrative violations. It is also responsible for enforcement efforts, and criminal prosecutions through DWC’s embedded prosecutor unit in the Travis County District Attorney’s office. Regulators in C&I also manage the Performance Based Oversight process, conduct carrier and health care provider audits, and respond to complaints.

Ms. Knight is an accomplished attorney with 22 years of experience. She has been with the Texas Department of Insurance since 2013 where she was director for the Policy Development Counsel, and most recently Associate Commissioner for Legal.

“We are extremely happy to have Debra come onboard to fill this vital role,” says Commissioner of Workers’ Compensation Cassie Brown. “Her vast experience and insurance background will be invaluable in leading our compliance and investigation efforts here at DWC.”

Ms. Knight has a bachelor of science degree from the University of Houston and a juris doctorate from the South Texas College of Law. During her career, Knight served in the United States Army Reserve, doing tours in Iraq and Ethiopia and retiring with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.

Knight’s new role with DWC begins November 1.
